It’s now been five years since Edward Carter and I recorded 24 consecutive podcasts for our series This Is Our Everest, in which we tried to damage each other as much as we could by watching the worst old television shows that we could find on YouTube.
But is this one of the worst? It’s certainly the oldest. The Appleyards was effectively a soap opera for kids that ran from 1952 to 1957, and this is a Christmas episode which just happens to be the only surviving episode of it. It was broadcast live, people didn’t have video recorders in the 1950s (they didn’t exist until 1972), the BBC didn’t save anything.
