Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.
It's time to make some changes around here, and I'm very lucky to be surrounded by excellent people who can help to make that happen.
All things must pass, and time doesn’t care for my bullshit. You see, Edward and I have been podcasting together for almost ten years, now. In the first place, we didn’t really talk about football. Funny, isn’t it, how things come full circle? The wiser people among you may have noticed that our podcasts have of late started to become less about football again.
There are a number of different reasons for this. He is not as enamoured with the game as he once was. And when I made the decision to call it the ‘Freewheelin’ Unexpected Delirium Podcast’, it wasn’t solely to annoy the living hell out of him because he’s a massive Bob Dylan fan. If anything, it was because we wanted to try something different, to use football as a jumping-off point to talk about whatever we liked.
But it’s not entirely about that. The sad news is that his health is failing. He was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver last year. For all our jokes about ‘bags of cans’ and the like, neither of us have been boozers for years, and he was never as much of one as I was, even when we were young and had fewer concerns about our long-term wellbeing. This is an auto-immune disorder, and it’s hit him hard.
Truth be told, it’s hit me hard, as well. He’s my absolute bestie, in a way that no-one else really has been throughout my entire life. I was the best man at his wedding; it was one of the greatest compliments of my life to be asked. And with that partly in mind, we both agree that weekly football podcasts from us two have gone as far as they can. He edits them for me and he loves doing it, but the truth of the matter is that they’re too much work for someone who needs to reserve their energy for infinitely more pressing matters.
This, in and of itself, wouldn’t be insurmountable. I could edit them myself (and have done a couple recently). But the combination of the illness, the amount of time for which we’ve been doing the podcast and that feeling of running out of energy that pre-dated this diagnosis means that we’ve decided to end this podcast.
The state of play as of right now is that the illness has progressed more quickly than had been anticipated or hoped for, and he already needs a liver transplant. Tests are taking place to ensure that this is viable, and the average waiting time for one is currently just over two months. So with this in mind, next week’s Freewheelin’ Unexpected Delirium Podcast will be the last. It’s time.
But hold your horses there, because we’re not quite done yet.
Firstly, he does want to keep podcasting, but needs something that’s lower energy. With that in mind, we’re bringing back our previous series “This is our Everest”, from 200%. For those of you who have joined us over the last couple of years, this was a television podcast in which we reviewed some of the stranger, quirkier and to be honest more terrible moments from the history of television. It was enormous fun to record, and we agree that it’s the right time to bring it back. It’ll only be once a month, but we think it’s worth reviving it. It might be a little different to before, but we’ll see.
And secondly, I’m not quite done with football podcasting. With that in mind, I’m incredibly happy to say that I’ll be launching a new one that will be somewhat different in a couple of weeks’ time. This will be somewhat more conventional to start with, a standard review of the weekend’s football. We’ll be recording it on Sunday nights and releasing it first thing on Monday morning; so, perfect for your weekly commute or as a soundtrack to stumbling round the kitchen in a semi-comatose haze while you wait for the kettle to boil for your first cup of tea of the day.
But I can’t do this alone, so I’m delighted to confirm that my new podcast co-host will be the excellent Sam Whyte. You may know her from her Twitter account. She’s an Everton supporter, brilliantly funny, and I can confirm that she will definitely not be putting up with any of my bullshit. I’ve got some new art lined up, I’m trimming down music clips, and we’ll be kicking this off from a week on Monday.
I’m lucky to have these people in my life. These new podcasts are going to be a blast.
Did not realise Carter was that ill. Do pass on my best wishes to him.
Looking forward to what comes next. For the pods, not necessarily for him.
Sad but understandable news. Mind I liked ‘This Is Our Everest’ so pleased that’s coming back. Also, you and Sam, two of my favourite Twitter people, coming in my ears? Absolutely yes please.
