On the ‘is Rooney a good manager’ question, I would like to suggest ‘no, no he’s not, and there is nothing in his after playing career CV that would suggest otherwise’. There’s a stat that I can’t locate (find in one quick 10 second look at Google) but I think it was something like half of all first time managers in the PL/FL/Conference/Scottish leagues never get a second go after they’re sacked first time. If Rooney had the same manager CV as, say, Sam Collins, he wouldn’t have had a second sniff at anything. (not sure who Sam Collins is? Exactly)

I'm still minded to think that we don't know, though I was persuaded a little by the idea put to me earlier today that Rosenior was the engine at Derby. DC United, I don't think performing badly was expected there.

Happy to admit that I had to Google Sam Collins. And there aren't enough opportunities for anyone, really. I do think things are a bit better now than they were on that front, though, than they were, I dunno, five years ago. Lampard fluffed it. GNev did as well. Fizzer is, well, Fizzer. Only Southgate made a go of it, but it was close at club level and I think you already know my theory on his success with England being primarily due to his understanding of and skillset in the very peculiar worlds of international management and the inner workings of the FA.

I wouldn't completely rule out Rooney making a go of it lower down. If he loves it to the point of needing it - and I suspect he does - he might well end up doing that.

Your figures sound about right, to me. I'm sure I've seen that before too, about half. Thing is, playing is ruthlessly meritocratic. If you ain't good enough, you ain't playing. But management is treated *slightly* differently because every managerial appointment is ultimately a bit of a roll of the dice. Too many unknowables, though you can often predict with confidence. Ex top players with big reps may bring in some more money, for all I know. Like I say, it's fundamentally a roll of the dice, though it is possible to stack the odds heavily in your favour, depending on money, size, history, clout, etc.
